Kasur, Pakistan (Christians in Pakistan) | A young Pakistani Christian activist Kabir Sohail Leslie’s brick-kiln school faces troubles due to lack of funds. Lack of funds had caused the school to stop its classes, Kabir Sohail revealed. This one of its kind school started earlier this year. Children of brick kiln laborers were attending classes before this school was closed.
“We need Rs.10,000/- to restart our school as it was closed because of lack of funds. We have 30 students at the brick kiln. Your small amount contribution can play a vital role in starting again our school. Help us is starting our school again! Any contribution will be appreciated even if it’s one hundred Rupees,” Kabir Sohail stated.
These less fortunate students have no other means to afford education, as they come from family already smitten by poverty most of them trodden by loans and are heavily indebted to the brick kiln owners. “This is the only school and source of education for bonded laborers working at brick kilns,” Kabir Sohail explained to Christians in Pakistan previously.
Government schools are three to four kilometers away from their homes which prevents them from enrolling in government schools. He said that parents are reluctant to send their children to schools far off; owing to the deteriorating situation where children are no longer safe. Leslie mentioned Zainab murder case, which is playing on their minds. “Parents are afraid of sending their children to schools,” he said. For this reason, they preferred a Christian teacher over sending them to government schools.
Students at Kabir’s school were being taught English, Urdu, and Mathematics. The school was set up with limited resources as this venture started with only a whiteboard, few books, stationery and sheets used for seating the students on the floor.
