Lahore, Pakistan (Christians in Pakistan) | Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar has directed the Chief Secretary Punjab to prepare a plan for restoration of United Christian Hospital in Lahore. UCH was once a state of the art hospital of Lahore, but now in a bad shape. The hospital nestled near Liberty Market, Gulberg III saw its golden era in the 1980s.
On Sunday, November 11, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar heard human rights cases at the Supreme Court’s Lahore Registry. While hearing the UCH case, Chief Justice remarked that UCH was a remarkable contribution from the Christian community but the hospital is now in a bad shape. He ordered the Chief Secretary Punjab to prepare a report about ways to restore UCH. Chief Secretary Punjab was directed to present his report within a week.
During the hearing, Chief Justice asked the Chief Secretary to ask the contractors working on governmental projects about how much they can contribute for the restoration of UCH. CJP further said that if funds for restoration could not be generated, he was ready to collect donations for this project.
Justice Saqib Nisar also ordered the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Lahore to plant trees in UCH; a gift from the Christian community to the citizens. The hearing was adjourned, as CJP sought a plan to revive UCH. The Chief Secretary Punjab told the court that all out efforts will be made in order to restore and revive United Christian Hospital.
UCH was established in 1948 by the missionaries living in Lahore. In 1965, the facility was shifted to the current building. American doctors and nurses served in this hospital; catering to a large populace residing in its vicinity. UCH also served as a training hospital and saw its golden era under foreigners’ administration. After the foreign administrators left UCH, locals failed to maintain UCH’s status. Ineffective administration gradually damaged this once a top-class hospital.
