How to Find God? | John 5:1-9a

If you've ever worked at finding God - because you needed help, or had questions, or got desperate with a massive challenge - you need to know something about Jesus...
Credit | Goshen Christian Reformed Church

What Is the Name That Is above All Names?

From his teaching series What Did Jesus Do?, R.C. Sproul reflects on the name that is above all names.
Remember when Jesus was in the upper room the night before His execution? That night that He established the Lord’s Supper and He went through that lengthy prayer—the High Priestly Prayer it is called. Do you remember one of the things that Jesus asked for in that prayer? He asked the Father to restore to Him the glory that He had with the Father from the beginning. He said, “I’ve done my mission. I’ve been obedient. Now Father, glorify your Son with the glory that He had with you from the foundation of the world.” And this is exactly what God does with Jesus at the completion of His work. There is an endpoint to His indignity. There is a completion to His humiliation that starts so starkly with His birth.
Therefore, hath God highly exalted Him and given to Him a name that is above every name.” (Phil. 2:9)

Now in other series that we’ve done, we’ve looked carefully at the names and titles that are used for Jesus in the New Testament, which are rich indeed and inspiring to us. But so often when Christians read this passage, they assume that what is being said here is that the name that is above every name is the name, Jesus. But that’s not what the text is saying. What the text is saying is that God has highly exalted Him to such a degree that at the name of Jesus, when you hear the name of Jesus, every knee should bow and every tongue should confess what? That He is Lord to the glory of God the Father. The name that is above every name is that title that belongs only to God. That title Adonai that refers to God as the sovereign one—that is the title that is revealed that belongs to Christ. Because of His humiliation, because of His perfect obedience in the role of a slave, God moves heaven and earth to exalt His Son, gives Him the name that is above every name, so that when you hear the name of Jesus, your impulse should be to be on your knees and confess that He is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

Pakistan Has the Weakest Higher Education System in the World | QS - A British Ranking Agency

Pakistan has the world’s weakest higher education system while US and UK have the strongest.
Pakistan has been ranked 50, with an overall score of 9.2 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British ranking agency. Despite the government’s claims to have invested billions in the country’s education system, Pakistan secured the lowest ranking of the fifty countries included in the list.
The United States received the top spot on the table with an overall score of 100 points, followed by the United Kingdom (98.5 points). While India was ranked 24 with 60.9 points.
The QS higher education system strength rankings are divided into four categories: system strength, access, flagship institution and economic context.

Countries with the best higher education systems:
  • United States – 100
  • United Kingdom – 98.5
  • Germany – 94
  • Australia – 92.6
  • Canada – 90.2
  • France – 89
  • Netherlands – 84.8
  • China – 83.5
  • South Korea – 80.1
  • Japan – 78.5

System Strength
The category assesses ‘overall national system strength’, based on how many of the country’s universities are featured in international rankings.
“Each country is awarded a score based on the number of its institutions which are ranked 700 or above in the QS World University Rankings®, divided by the average position of those institutions. The aim is to give an overall indication of each country’s standing in the global ranking tables,” the website stated.

Varsities under this category are ranked according to the number of places available at internationally ranked universities.

Flagship institution

The ‘flagship’ category assesses the performance of the country’s leading institution within global rankings.
“This is a normalized score, based on the place each nation’s top university occupies in the QS World University Rankings.”

Economic Context

The economic context takes into account the impact of “national investment in higher education, by comparing each nation’s financial situation to its performance in the international rankings.”

Taking all four categories into consideration, Pakistan has been ranked at the bottom of the table as compared to Canada 5, France 6, China 8, Saudi Arabia 36 and Turkey 39 among several other countries.

1,100 'ILLEGAL' Bibles SEIZED by police in China

Police in China has carried out a shocking crackdown on Christian worship by confiscating more than 1,100 “illegal” religious texts.
Chinese police carried out a huge raid on churches in Shandong province in the east of the country, seizing a huge number of publications and electronic disks.
A Christian in Jining city said police were actively “hostile” towards Christian churches but did not target local Buddhist temples.
Instead, they only targeted Christian churches, where they seized a huge number of Bibles, both in physical and digital form.
Authorities claimed the raids were part of their campaign to target pornography but worshippers say only religious texts were seized.
And an anti-Christian persecution charity said “ethnic and religious affairs bureau” officials had even joined police to carry out the raids.
International Christian Concern said: “Persecution in China’s eastern Shandong province escalated recently as authorities used an anti-pornography and illegal publications campaign to wrongly target at least five house churches and also ordered that students report their religious beliefs.
“During their visit to these churches, the authorities confiscated more than 1,100 copies of alleged ‘illegal’ publications and disks.”
It comes amid an accelerating crackdown on religion in China after 100 Christians were sent to so-called “re-education” camps earlier this year.
More than 100 believers were detained in Xinjiang province and taken to facilities where they were taught to be loyal to the country’s ideologies.
These “mind-transformation centers” instruct detainees to be loyal to China, not their religion, with worried family members reporting poor conditions.
Most of those detained are Muslim members of the Uyghur ethnic minority group, who are being targeted as part of the country’s anti-terror crackdown. However, Christians are also often sent to the camps.
One local church leader told charity Open Doors: “Some stay there for a month, others for half a year or even longer.”
Open Doors said state-approved churches do exist but with high-security measures in place.
The charity said: “Government-registered churches are also required to scan ID cards when they come to Sunday services. An alarm will sound if anyone works for the government or a public institution.
“Many Christians have stopped going to registered churches and instead meet in smaller secret groups.”

Peshawar’s administration turns a blind eye as Christian Colony turns into a garbage disposal site

Residents of Peshawar’s Christian Colony wallow in municipality’s neglect. The garbage from the entire city is dumped at the neighborhood. The unsanitary and foul conditions are causing trouble to the occupants of the Christian Colony. In this regard, Christian activist Yasir Bhatti said that “Christian community who cleans the entire city is forced to live at a place which is a garbage disposal site”.
Christian Colony nestled on Ring Road, is a predominantly Christian neighborhood, where heaps of garbage can be seen everywhere. The residents complain of the negligence of the concerned authorities as the municipality dumps waste in the colony. The roads and other parts of the colony remain littered, the neighborhood has severe garbage disposal problem. The problem is not limited to just dumping of the waste; soon after the waste is disposed of, cows, dogs, and birds begin gorging on the trash. As a result, the waste is scattered everywhere.

Speak Out For Pastor Koh And Other Abductees | Sign The Petition

On Feb. 13th, 2017 Pastor Raymond Koh was abducted near his home in Petaling Jaya, West Malaysia.
Investigations by the police on his whereabouts have been frustrating for the family as authorities are more focused on his alleged criminal activities of attempting to convert Muslim teenagers to Christianity in the northern state of Perlis. Malaysian laws prohibit the proselytizing of Muslims.
Significant changes have just taken place in Malaysia, presenting a unique opportunity for immediate advocacy for Pastor Koh as well as Amri Che Mat, and Joshua Hilmy and his wife Ruth Sitepu, all of whom were abducted in Malaysia, disappearing under similar circumstances.
Mahathir Mohamad was just sworn in as Malaysia’s seventh prime minister on Thursday, May 9, 2018. It was a stunning election comeback, defeating the coalition that has ruled the nation for six decades since independence from Britain. Initial signs indicate that his government may be more amenable to Christians and work to uproot some of the corruption issues plagued by the previous Prime Minister. This, together with new developments in the case, including a police whistleblower coming forward implicating a branch of the police force in Malaysia in the abductions of Pastor Raymond Koh and Amri Che Mat, opens an opportunity for urgent advocacy.
Please add your name to our letter on behalf of Raymond Koh, Amri Che Mat, and Joshua Hilmy and his wife Ruth Sitepu, all of whom are abductees who need our support and prayer that they can safely return to their families.

Delhi’s archbishop urged prayers for India’s democracy | Hindu Nationalists Reacts

NEW DELHI — The Archbishop of Delhi has set off a political controversy with a letter that refers to a "turbulent political atmosphere" threatening democracy and secularism and urges all priests to "pray for the country" ahead of the 2019 national election.
"It is wrong to try and instigate castes or communities. You can tell them to vote for a right candidate or party but to suggest voting for one party and not another and term yourself as secular vs pseudo-secular is unfortunate," BJP spokesperson Shaina NC has said.
The letter, dated May 8 and addressed to all churches in the capital, doesn't really advocate any candidate or party.
The Archbishop, Anil Couto, also asks in his letter for a prayer campaign and a day of fasting every week "for the nation". The letter was sent with a prayer that he said must be read at masses on Sunday.
"We are witnessing a turbulent political atmosphere which poses a threat to the democratic principles enshrined in our constitution and the secular fabric of our nation," the Archbishop says at the start of his letter.

Read: Delhi's Archbishop Calls for Change

"It is our hallowed practice to pray for our country and its political leaders all the time but all the more so when we approach the general elections. As we look forward towards 2019 when we will have new government let us begin a prayer campaign for our country from May 13..." the letter says.
The attached prayer that all churches have been instructed to read out during mass, says: "May the ethos of true democracy envelop our elections with dignity and the flames of honest patriotism enkindle our political leaders. This is our cry, Heavenly Father, in these troubled times as we see the clouds eclipsing the light of truth, justice, and freedom."
The Archbishop's office has denied any political motive in the prayer, calling it a standard practice before elections.
"I have not seen the Archbishop's letter, but I want to say India is one of those countries where minorities are safe and no one is allowed to discriminate on the basis of caste and religion," Home Minister Rajnath Singh told reporters today.

Does the Bible Say Coexist?

Surely you've seen the COEXIST bumper sticker before: suggesting that Muslims, Hippies (I guess), the sexually confused, Jews, Wiccans, Taoists, and Christians should be more tolerant of each other.
Before it looked like the Coexist logo you see on most VWs, first it included only the symbols for Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. It was made in 2001 by a Polish artist for a competition, later popularized by U2 on their Vertigo tour. This led to a legal dispute because you can't coexist when there's money to be made!
Yeah, it's hypocrisy. The facts co-existers don't want to discuss is that COEXI and S downright hate T, whom the sticker is directed at. I and S just prove atheists are religious. E wants to force everyone to bow to their sex gods. C's founder, Muhammad, killed people who wouldn't convert to his religion.
But Jesus and His apostles told Christians to live peaceably with everyone (Romans 12:18). Love your enemies and bless those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44). When Jesus was reviled, He didn't revile back but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly (1 Peter 2:23).
Jesus said, "My peace I give to you, not as the world gives" (John 14:27). No other religion or philosophy can give anyone peace. They are at enmity with others and with God. Only by believing in His Son Jesus do we have peace with God and will be saved on the day of judgment.
Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one gets to the Father but by me" (John 14:6). That message offends because it says all other beliefs are wrong. But this gospel of peace must be preached to the world so others may hear and coexist with God, when we understand the text.

Shut Mouth or Open Mouth? | Rev. David Inks

Confession: Heidelberg Catechism, QA 59-64;
Scripture: Romans 9:30-10:17 (Read from ESV)
Preacher: Rev. David Inks
Sermon Outline:
I. Legal Problems
II. Lamb's Provision
III. Logos Preaching
IV. Life Practice

The Heidelberg Catechism
Q&A 59
A. In Christ I am right with God and heir to life everlasting.
Q&A 60
A. Only by true faith in Jesus Christ. Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God's commandments and of never having kept any of them, and even though I am still inclined toward all evil, nevertheless, without my deserving it at all, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner, as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me. All I need to do is to accept this gift of God with a believing heart.
Q&A 61
A. It is not because of any value my faith has that God is pleased with me. Only Christ's satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness make me right with God. And I can receive this righteousness and make it mine in no other way than by faith alone.
Q&A 62
A. Because the righteousness which can pass God's scrutiny must be entirely perfect and must in every way measure up to the divine law. Even the very best we do in this life is imperfect and stained with sin.
Q&A 63
A. This reward is not earned; it is a gift of grace.
Q&A 64
A. No. It is impossible for those grafted into Christ by true faith not to produce fruits of gratitude.
Scripture Reading:
Romans 9:30-10:17 King James Version (KJV)
30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. 31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; 33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. 2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. 5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Here Comes the Bride | Revelation 21:1-14

Scripture: Revelation 21:1-14 (Read from ESV)
Preacher: Rev. David Inks
Sermon Outline:
I. The Bride's Intimacy (indwelling) 1-4
II. The Bride's Secret Moisturizer 5-8
III. The Bride's Bouquet (outshining) 9-14

Scripture Reading:
Revelation 21:1-14 King James Version (KJV)
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. 9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. 10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; 12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Apex court directs to officially refer to Christians as ‘Masihi’ instead of ‘Esai’

On May 11, Friday, a two-member bench of the apex court issued directions while hearing the petition case filed by a Pakistani Christian Samuel Pyara. This two-member bench was chaired by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar himself. Justice Ijaz ul Hassan was the other member of this bench hearing the case number H.R.C.No.20171-B of 2018. Samuel Payara had moved the court regarding the use of word ‘Masihi’ for Christians instead of ‘Esai’.
“It has complained despite the decision taken by the Council of Islamic Ideology in its 175th meeting held on 28-29th September, 2009 that there was no harm, as per Shariah Injunctions, to refer to the members of Christian community as “Masihi” instead of “Esai”, no steps have been taken by the government in this regard.
Let the recommendations of the Council of Islamic Ideology be implemented in letter and spirit and arrangement should be made in all official records, documents, correspondence etc. to refer to the Christian community as Masihi instead of Esai,” the court order reads.
In 2016, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) also issued orders regarding the use of Masihi for Christians instead of Esai, in the column for Religion. In this regard, Christian MPA Shakeel Ivan Khokhar struggled greatly to get this directive officially issued from NADRA. MPA Shakeel Ivan Khokhar, had written a petition to the Director of National Database and Registration Authority Headquarter in Islamabad, seeking official directions regarding the use of word Masihi for Christians in the NADRA forms, data, and records.

SANTA FE, TEXAS—A male student was taken into custody Friday morning after a shooting spree inside a high school in southeast Texas left at least 10 people dead, the majority believed to be students, and 10 wounded, authorities said.
The suspect was identified as 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, according to a law enforcement official.

In what has become a national rite, authorities arrived en masse at a campus, this time at Santa Fe High School, 35 miles from Houston, as students fled in tears. In addition to the suspect, authorities said another student was detained as a person of interest.
The Santa Fe Independent School District said in a tweet that “explosive devices” had been found both on the campus and in surrounding areas.
The school district said the situation at the school began at about 7:45 a.m. Friday, just after the start of the school day.
None of the victims were immediately identified.
One of the injured was an officer working for the Santa Fe school district as a school resource officer, said Joe Giusti, a Galveston County commissioner.
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed heartbreak and frustration about the shooting.
Trump said his administration would do “everything in our power” to keep guns away from those who should not have them.
“This has been going on for too long in our country — too many years, too many decades now,” Trump said in the East Room of the White House, where he was making remarks on prison reform.
“My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools, and do everything we can to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others,” he said.
Trump’s comments came months after he vowed to take action on school safety and gun restrictions in the wake of a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in February, where 17 were killed. At the time, the president, a member of the National Rifle Association who has strong political support from gun owners, said he would look at stricter background checks and raising the minimum age for buying an assault weapon, proposals that the group opposes.

He also pressed for an NRA-backed proposal to arm teachers and said he would favor taking guns away from potentially dangerous people without due process. But Trump did not press for action on any of those initiatives, and Congress did not follow through.

Christian charity apprehensive over a bill making Quran classes in all schools mandatory

CLAAS-UK a Christian legal and charity group has expressed great concerns over a legislation passed by the Punjab Assembly according to which teachings of Holy Quran were compulsory for every student in all schools and colleges across Punjab. A new bill, Compulsory Teaching of the Holy Quran Bill 2017 was passed by the provincial assembly on May 4, Friday.
The Punjab Assembly passed this bill unanimously, while already the National Assembly and the Senate had already given a green signal to compulsory teaching of Holy Quran bill in 2017. This bill makes it compulsory for all students of grade one to five to recite Quran in Arabic, while all students in grade six and above are required to recite the Holy Quran with its translation.
Raising grave concerns over this matter, CLAAS-UK has stated that the rights of religious minorities will be violated. Remarking about the situation, Director of CLAAS-UK Mr. Nasir Saeed stated: “It is sad that for minorities, especially Christians who are living in large numbers in Punjab, their religious and fundamental rights are totally ignored.
He continued that the provincial government did not announce alternate for minorities’ students. “No alternative programme has been announced for non-Muslim students of Punjab”, he said while adding that this step will fan religious intolerance. “It will promote bigotry and hatred against non-Muslims in Pakistani society, something which is already on the rise.”
This bill was tabled by MPA Dr. Waseem Akhtar, from Jamaat-e-Islami on January 30, earlier this year. During the 34th session of the Punjab Assembly, he introduced the ‘Punjab Compulsory Teaching of the Holy Quran Bill.’ In line with this bill, all government schools and colleges in Punjab provinces will teach Holy Quran to all students as a compulsory subject.

His case became worst ever as the FIR no. 123 registered against him invokes most sections as has never happened before. Police have charged him with Sections 295A, 295C, 298A of the Pakistan Penal Code. Moreover, 12 other sections including 3/4 ,11/13 ,14/16, 20, 419, 420, 468, 471,109 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Nadeem Samson was arrested by the police on November 24, 2017. He was taken to an unknown location. Since then, none of the lawyers or NGOs has agreed to provide legal assistance to him. 44-year-old Nadeem appears before the court but no progress is made in this case because there is no defense lawyer.

Details emerge that Nadeem has been embroiled in this case on the grounds of a property dispute with a Muslim man Abdul Haq. Abdul Haq has illegally seized the property of Nadeem’s uncle. Subsequently, Nadeem offered to pay the cost of the property to Abdul Haq and get his uncle’s property back. It has been alleged that in the course of a transaction, Abdul Haq laid hands on Nadeem’s National Identity Card copy (CNIC) and bought a SIM that was registered with Nadeem’s ID card copy.

Abdul Haq used the SIM to send derogatory messages using Facebook. After some time, Abdul Haq plotted to get rid of Nadeem and conspired against him. Police hooked Nadeem and burnt his house in Lahore, charging him of committing blasphemy. At the same time, police hunted for his brother and family in order to arrest them too. First woman Dame Sarah Mullally installed as Bishop of London at St Paul's Cathedral

Dame Sarah Mullally has been installed as the 133rd Bishop of London at St Paul's Cathedral - becoming one of the most senior figures in the Church of England and the first woman to hold the post.
The former nurse was invested on International Nurses Day - Florence Nightingale's birthday - echoing the new bishop's former career as a nurse.
Bishop Mullally performed the tradition of knocking three times on the Cathedral's Great West door with her pastoral staff, a spokesman for the Diocese of London said.

In her sermon, she preached on the theme of "being subversive for Christ" - noting that 150 years ago this week, suffragettes placed a bomb underneath the same seat upon which she had been enthroned as Bishop of London.
She also spoke of the challenges facing London, particularly escalating knife crime, and referenced historical sexual abuse within the Church.
Bishop Mullally called for a culture that "challenges deference and the abuse of power" and for victims of abuse to be listened to.
She added: "We need to speak up for the whole of London, to work to challenge the violence and the crime that have led mothers to clean their own children's blood from our pavements.
"Could there be a starker image or a more urgent wake-up call for all who love this city, who believe it can have an even better future?"

Facebook has suspended around 200 apps so far in data misuse investigation

Facebook has published an update on its investigation into “apps that had access to large amounts” of data that it announced back in March in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and after investigating thousands of apps, the company has announced that “around 200” apps have been suspended.
It’s not clear that any of those apps have actually abused their access to Facebook user data, but Facebook has some concerns and is suspending them from working “pending a thorough investigation into whether they did in fact misuse any data.” That investigation will involve Facebook conducting interviews with developers, requesting information about the app and the data it has access to, along with audits “that may include on-site inspections.”
In the event that Facebook does discover that more apps have abused access to this kind of user data, it will ban them immediately, and notify users through this page, which much like Cambridge Analytica will inform them if either they or their friends allowed for their data to be compromised through the app.
As announced before, Facebook is focusing on apps from 2014 and earlier, when Facebook allowed apps to pull information not only from the immediate user but from their friends as well, even if they hadn’t used the app themselves.
It’s good to see that Facebook is taking action here, but these early results help illustrate how big the problem actually was with the platform. Cambridge Analytica having access to millions of user’s data was bad enough, but that there might be 200 other potential companies that had similar access — even if it ends up that all 200 are totally benign — for years isn’t an encouraging sign.

Should Christians Fear the Lord?

From 2015 Fall Conference, R.C. Sproul describes the distinction between servile fear and filial fear.

“We are told again and again to fear the Lord, in the Old Testament, especially in the Psalms, but in the New Testament, it is hardly ever mentioned. In Luke 17:4, Zechariah predicts we will serve Him without fear, should I fear the Lord now in light of all the mercy He has shown?”

[Martin] Luther made the distinction in answering that same question centuries ago that when the Bible speaks of the fear of the Lord, it speaks not of the fear that a prisoner who’s being tortured by his tormentor or what Luther called a servile fear, but rather he speaks of a filial fear, the fear we have of failing to honor and glorify God. It’s not that dreadful concept but rather it’s the sense of reverence and awe that you have to have—which is the beginning of wisdom. And that doesn’t change from the Old Testament to the New Testament. The fear of God is not without trembling. The New Testament does tell us that as we grow, we grow in fear and trembling as we’re working out our salvation so that there’s always that sense of awe and trembling before the magnificent glory and majesty of God.

What Is Definite Atonement?

From 2012 Theology Night, R.C. Sproul explains that God’s purpose in the atonement was limited and definite.

What is in view here is God’s purpose, His design. Did God intend, when He sent into the world His Son to die, did He intend that that death would actually save people, or did He just hope it would? I mean, to ask a question like that is to answer it. You know very well that God knew from all eternity who was going to come to His Son and who wouldn’t. He knew that the death of Christ had a definite purpose, that would definitely be accomplished, and definitely was accomplished.

If you look at it like that, how can you speak of anything but a definite atonement? So first of all, the atonement is limited in its efficacy to all who believe. I think we can agree on that. But it’s also limited in its eternal design for God’s elect—that Christ laid down His life for His sheep and all for whom Christ died come to Christ, experience His redemption, and are redeemed forever.

Are You a Sinner?

By show of hands, how many of you are sinners? Yeah, everyone's hands should be raised. The Bible says, "All have sinned and fallen" way short of God's perfection (Romans 3:23).

Here's another question. How many of you are criminals? Raise your hand. The same hands should be raised. Most people might agree that they're sinners. Hey, no one's perfect, right? But hardly anyone thinks of themselves as a criminal -- even criminals! Yet that's exactly what sin makes us.
The Bible says. "Sin is lawlessness" (1 John 3:4).

You might say, "Wait, I haven't broken any laws!" But you have. You've broken God's law. You've committed perjury, you've slandered God's good name, you're a murderer... "Hey, I haven't killed anybody." But according to Jesus, you have. If you've ever hated anyone or even called them names, you've murdered in your heart and you're worthy of hell (Matthew 5:21-22).

Whoa, that's a little extreme. Sent to hell because I said a bad word? Yes. God is so holy sinners cannot stand in His presence. Sin is no small thing. You think it's no big deal because, hey, you're a sinner! But remember, Adam and Eve's sin resulted in all of creation being cursed. That's how serious sin is.
To Adam, He said, ‘Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.’” Genesis 3:17
For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it...” Romans 8:19
It's so serious that you needed Jesus to live perfectly as your representative and die in your place as your substitute. Everyone who believes in Him will be forgiven and have eternal life. On the day of judgment, you'll not be sentenced as a criminal but received as an heir of His kingdom!

Christ will send His angels to gather out of His kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. But the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of the Father (Matthew 13:41-42).

If God has pardoned you in Christ, live as someone who has been rehabilitated and do not return to a life of crime, when we understand the text!
